How I did it
Work that’s mine — and does some good.
I’m Cody. I came to product design through illustration and a few years in operations at Postmates and Twitter, and I’ve spent the last seven years designing tools for healthcare.
For a while I let the work be measured by what it handed back to me — the title, the raise, the approval. I chased those, got them, and found they don’t add up to much on their own. What pulls at me now is different: work that’s unmistakably mine, that includes more people than it leaves out, and that treats the person on the other side of the screen with real care.
I’m learning to be more open with it, too — to make room for other designers, to write down what I’ve figured out and give it away, and to let this craft stay a little joyful. A reader’s atlas is one of those for-the-joy-of-it projects, and I keep an hour a week free for any designer who wants to talk.
